Winter 2010
Winter 2010– Ah, the quiet after the rush of the holidays. And, there are a few more weeks left to enjoy winter while looking forward to spring. All very good things, in my opinion. Many places throughout Arizona were adorned with Christmas snow during the holidays. Of course, the lower elevations of the state had their Christmas rain. Some of that snow is still around. Arizona’s ski resorts are happening places right now. Needless to say, we are happy for any sort of precipitation.

Bill To Grant Fossil Creek Protection
Fossil Creek could earn a protected status under a broad wilderness bill passed by the US Senate in January 2009.
The designation would mean that Fossil Creek is kept free flowing. Wild and Scenic Status would stop the creation of any new dams or structures on the creek. However, the area would remain open to the public for recreation.
Fossil Creek flows from the Mogollon Rim for 17 miles to the Verde
River. During 2006, the area underwent a restoration project the restored the river’s flow. Previously, the creek’s water was harnessed to service two power plants. Two hydroelectric plants, the Childs and Irving power plants, previously hindered the flow of water into the creek.
The plants were built in the early 1900’s to provide power for central Arizona mining operations. However, previous to decommission, the plants were only providing 1 percent of the total electricity for APS. Prior to the power plants' dismantling, the creek would have at times little to no water running through certain areas.
Fossil Creek is among only a handful of streams in the southwest with travertine. Native fish, brought in by airlift, have also been reintroduced to the creek. The multi-million dollar restoration project has helped Fossil Creek to recapture its natural beauty as well as provide a model for future restoration projects. Fossil Creek can be reached from the Fossil Springs Trail, emanating from a trailhead located about 4 miles west of Strawberry on Fossil Creek Road, also known as FR 708.

Deep Thoughts
Two wrongs are only the beginning.
For every action, there is an equal and opposite criticism.
Why do the signs that state “Slow Children” have a picture of a running child?
How can there be self-help “groups”?
Why is it that night falls but day breaks?
What is another word for thesaurus?
Money isn’t everything but at least it encourages relatives to stay in touch.
Why call them hot water heaters if the water is already hot?
If sour milk is used to make yogurt, how do you know when yogurt has gone bad?
How does the guy who drives the snowplow get to work?
Words that Don’t Exist But Should
Aquadextrous – Possessing the ability to turn the bathtub tap on and off with your toes.
Carperpeuation – The act, when vacuuming, of running over a string or a piece of lint at least a dozen times, reaching over and picking it up, examining it, then putting it back down to give the vacuum one more chance.
Disconfect – To sterilize the piece of candy you dropped on the floor by blowing on it, assuming this will somehow “remove” all the germs.
Elbonics – The actions of two people maneuvering for one armrest in the movie theater.
Phonesia – The affliction of dialing a phone number and forgetting whom you were calling just as they answer.
Pupkis – The moist residue left on a window after a dog presses its nose on it.
Telecrastination – The act of always letting the phone ring at least twice before you pick it up, even when you are only six inches away.
